Yesterday was my 19th birthday, woooo!

I can't believe it had been a year since I turned 18, and we were setting off to London for our amazing art trip!

Last year was such a fantastic birthday, that it would have been impossible for this year to live up to it, especially as I was in college and actually had to do work.

But on a much better note, look at my cake:

I know it's rather sad to make your own birthday cake, but anyone else would have done it wrong!

I have named it a Malteser Deluxe Cake.

It was so so so good. And we had chinese for my birthday dinner, I was suffering from a serious food baby, but luckily a slightly longer gym session helped reduce the baby! Just need to work a little harder to lose weight now, because we all know how fatty a chinese takeaway was.

I got some really cute presents, one of my friends from college got me a print of one of the pieces from her dads exhibition, my favourite one, it reminds me of butterflies.

The funniest was my a like mattress topper thing to make my bed more comfy, the funny bit was what my mum said, she was talking about dustbunnies at uni, and saying that the mattress topper would keep away the dustbunnies of the person who had my bed before me, and then said and the dustbunnies of whoever else ends up in my bed, and I said from when Lucy or whoever comes to stay and she said 'yeah, that's what I meant...' tut tut Mother! hehe.

This Saturday, me and the girlies will be going for my birthday night out into town, so that should be fun, if we can go to someone's for predrinks I'll make a cake for everyone cos I'm nice.

AHHHH, I'm so excited and hopefdully my dress will come tomorrow or friday!

Random I know, but I love my sad little spoon, and I shall tell you the story of my sad spoon.

Well yesterday I was slightly starving because I hadn't brought any lunch to college, because I am a genius, so I made my friends walk to Asda with me, through the snow and all that jazz, so that I could get something to eat.

I got a lovely and yummy, unhealthy pasta pot, but when I found my friends again they were wandering around the yoghurt aisle, so I hmmed and went to see what horrible yoghurts they were looking at (I don't like yoghurts, or dairy products in general; yuck!), so 2 of them bought the big pots of Onken yoghurts. So we went back to college and sat by the classroom door to eat our food, my friends finished their massive pots of Onken yoghurt, greedy things!

Anyway, we are now at today, and I forgot my left over pizza, silly me, so I thought what the f***, I'll kind of start my diet a few days early, so we had another trip to Asda and I bought myself a pot of fat free vanilla Onken Yoghurt and a clementine (yummy fruit).

So we're sat in the canteen eating our food and I only eat half of the yoghurt, otherwise I would have had 60% of my daily intake of sugar, just from a yoghurt! And because I'm orally fixated (according to Freud, but that can be another blog post...) I start sucking/nibbling my spoon, and I don't realise I've cracked it a little, because I was kind of looking at this guy, who must have thought I was rather weird because I constantly had this little plastic spoon in my mouth, but to be fair he had his spoon in his mouth, so ha.

But then my poor little spoon properly cracks, and I'm all sad, and my spoon is all sad, so I drew a sad face on it, and from that moment on he was my sad little spoon and my art mascot.

So now he just sits on my table in art, being cute and sad. And although he is sad it makes me happy to look at him, because he is my little sad spoon.

So my newest project at college is based on the book 1984 by George Orwell, which I still haven't finished reading but shh!

For those of you haven't read it, or know nothing about it, it was written in 1948, about the future of a corrupt government and their mission to seize control over everything that you are. The story is based around Winston, a character who does not agree with the strict and ridiculous views of the party, so he obtains a diary, any form of self expression is against the law, he begins to write, and so on and so forth, I haven't gotten to anything exciting yet.

I swear I keep meaning to finish it, but the book is on my phone and it hurts my eyes and there are other distracting things going on in the world!

Over the Christmas holidays I was meant to be doing research and I just felt completely uninspired and anyone that does art knows that that is really not good at all and that you might as well crawl up into a hole and die (which I kind of did, because I got ill the second day in and had to stay home). So after talking to my tutors I decided to look at slogans and stuff like that, political things, other opinions and just stuff really, so here's some stuff ive done so far:

When reading the book this is how I picture big brother, he is meant to look like Barty Crouch from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, however I wanted to make his moustache bigger because I thought if I drew him exactly like the images from the film, he would have looked a little too much like Hitler, however he ended up looking like Hitler anyway, which although it was appropriate to the story, isn't how I wanted him to look. However, it is rather funny in lessons making sheets and sheets of photocopies of "Hitler's" face, all of the lower art students much think I'm a rather strange person when I'm walking around the halls with Ingsoc party slogans written allover my sketchbook.

One of the artists I've been looking at in my research is Barbara Kruger:

She uses found photographs, layering them with text, such text usually questions our views on feminism, classicism, consumerism and individual autonomy and desire. These ideas are contrasted with the images she uses, usually taken from mainstream magazines. Some of her more famous slogans are ones such as "I shop therefore I am," and "Your body is a battleground."
